Why BS Yediyurappa and his son Vijayendra matter for the bypolls in Karnataka

After furore over exclusion of BS Yediyurappa’s son and BJP state vice president BY Vijayendra in the bypoll in-charge committee, the Bharatiya Janata Party on Monday evening added his name and made him one of the party in-charges of Hangal bypoll.

The BJP on October 1st had released a list of 24 in-charges for the upcoming bypolls in Sindagi and Hangal. 12 leaders were named as the in-charges for Sindagi and 12 for Hangal bypolls.

Vijayendra who led from the front during previous bypolls during his father BS Yediyurappa’s tenure as Chief Minister was not included in the election management committee for the upcoming bypolls.

Vijayendra’s supporters expressed anger on social media and blamed BJP national general secretary (organisation) BL Santhosh and party state president Nalin Kumar Kateel for excluding Vijayendra’s name from the list.

After Vijayendra’s supporters expressed their objection, the BJP state vice president took to Twitter and asked his supporters to refrain from making derogatory comments against the party leaders.

Within hours of the uproar, the BJP released an updated in-charges list in which Vijayendra’s name was included. Even in the new list, Vijayendra’s name featured last.

The BJP has now appointed 12 in-charges for Sindagi constituency in Vijayapura district and 13 leaders for Hangal constituency in Haveri district. The 25-member list includes several ministers, legislators and local leaders who have been entrusted to ensure the party candidates’ victory in the bypolls scheduled on October 30.
