Vishal Jood: The curious case of the convict who returned as a 'hero' from Oz

On Sunday, Haryana youth Vishal Jood returned to his home in Karnal after serving six months of a 12-month jail sentence in Sydney, Australia. Jood, arrested for his alleged involvement in attacks on members of the Sikh community in Australia, returned to a hero’s welcome and a mini-parade in Haryana. Jood and his supporters have since claimed that in fact he had been attacked and falsely indicted for upholding the honour of the Indian Tricolour.

While confirming that Jood had been deported, Australia’s Minister for Immigration, Citizenship and Multicultural Affairs Alex Hawke stated in a series of tweets that “attempts to undermine Australia’s social cohesion will not be tolerated.”
