Netflix employees file complaint against streamer following Dave Chappelle controversy

Dave Chappelle’s ‘The Closer’ which has been making headlines for the controversy surrounding it has had a new development. Now, two Netflix employees have filed an unfair practice complaint with National Labour Relations Board.

According to Variety, the employees have alleged that the streamer retaliated against them after they joined the protest against Chappelle’s latest special. An NLRB representative confirmed that a charge pertaining to an unfair practice complaint was filed on Wednesday.

Recently, B. Pagels-Minor, another employee of the streaming giant was fired after the company said they shared confidential information regarding The Closer’s viewership data outside the company. The information was reported in a Bloomberg article, however, Minor has denied such claims, the website added.

Other employees who were faced with an action for joining the bandwagon of speaking up against Chappelle’s show also include Software engineer Terra Field who was suspended after she posted a tweet thread about the show. However, it was said that the suspension was for attending the company’s Quarterly Business Review meeting for which she was not an invitee. Netflix later reinstated Field.

Netflix later clarified that no employee of it was faced with retaliation for standing up against the show.

“We recognise the hurt and pain caused to our trans colleagues over the last few weeks,” a Netflix spokesman said a statement. “But we want to make clear that Netflix has not taken any action against employees for either speaking up or walking out,” it said in a statement, Variety reported.

According to the complaint filed by Pagels-Minor and Field, the streamer took the actions in order to stop workers from speaking out, reported The Verge.

The two employees have both reportedly signed the company’s employment agreements that require private arbitration, thus making it more difficult when it comes to filing a lawsuit.

The NLRB is tasked to investigate any charges or complaints that it receives. It can also try to secure a settlement or issue a complaint based on the findings.
