Belagavi Muslim youth's murder: 10 arrested; police say girl's parents hired killers

Belagavi police have arrested 10 people in connection with murder of Arbaaz Aftab Mulla including the girl’s parents and president of Sri Ram Sene Hindustan’s (SRSH), Khanapur Taluk President of the organisation Maharaja Nagappa alias Pundalik Mutgekar. The arrests come over a week after Arbaaz’s dismembered body was found on the railway track on the outskirts of Belagavi’s Khanapur town.

According to police, the parents of the girl hired contract killers to murder Arbaaz over the duo’s inter-faith relationship.

The Belagavi police in a statement said that the case was transferred from the Railway Police to Khanapur Police station on October 4, 2021. The police had formed a special team led by DySP Shivanand Katagi to nab the accused and investigate the matter.

The police said that the special team launched a manhunt for absconding Pundalik Mutgekar and managed to arrest him. During the interrogation, Mutgekar spilled the beans and named the other accused who conspired to eliminate Arbaaz.

Belgavi SP Laxman Nibargi said that 10 people have been arrested in Arbaaz murder case.

“We have arrested 10 people including the girl’s parents. Accused named Erappa Kambar and Sushila Kambar (parents of the girl) had given money to Pundalik Mutgekar to murder Arbaaz. On September 28, Arbaaz was called to Khanapur where he was killed by the accused,” Belgavi SP said.

Besides the girl’s parents, the other accused are Maharaja Nagappa alias Pundalik Mutgekar, Kutubuddin Allabaksh Bepari, Maruti Pralhad Sugat, Manjunath Tukaram Gondhli, Ganapati Sugat, Prashant Patil, Praveen Pujeri, Shridhar Doni.

The police have booked the accused under IPC sections 302 (Murder), 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information to screen offender), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 120B (criminal conspiracy), 384 (punishment for extortion), 388 (Extortion by threat of accusation of an offence), 149 (Every member of unlawful assembly guilty of offence committed in prosecution of common object) and section 27 of the arms act.

Arbaaz’s decapitated body was found on the railway track in Khanapur of Belagavi in September 28. It is being suspected that the man was allegedly murdered over an interfaith relationship.

Mulla’s mother, Najeema had said that a man named Pundalik Maharaj (actual name Pundalik Muthagekar) member of the right wing group and the girl’s father were responsible for her son’s murder.
