Explained: What is India bringing to the table at COP26

On Thursday, before leaving for his trip to Italy and then the UK to attend the G20 and COP26 summits, PM Modi stated that global economic and health recovery post-pandemic and the climate crisis will be the focus of his discussions at the two summits. Specifically on COP26, the PM stated that he would discuss measures such as equitable distribution of carbon space, mobilization of finance and technology transfer to collectively combat climate change.

As reported by Reuters on Wednesday, India has once again rejected calls to announce a net-zero carbon emissions target. Environment secretary RP Gupta told reporters that announcing net-zero targets was not the solution to the climate crisis.

Environment Minister Bhupendra Yadav has stated that “all options are on the table” for India as it is on track to achieve its 2015 Paris conference targets and has the room to revise those targets, if needed.
