When the crypto artwork EVERYDAYS by Beeple was sold for $69 million at Christie’s in March 2021, it created quite a stir. Now, the artist (real name Mike Winkelmann) is returning to the auction house with his latest creation, hoping to bring the world to its knees, once more. This time, he’s back with a new iteration in the world of non-fungible tokens: a lifesize 3-D video sculpture (HUMAN ONE, 2021) that will evolve over the course of the artist’s life.

The sculpture, called HUMAN ONE, is a hybridised physical and digital artwork in the shape of a monolithic prism about the size of a phone booth. LED screens on each side display animated footage of an astronaut walking through an alien landscape. The piece rotates slowly, ensuring that the figure is never outside of the frame. Talking about the visuals, Beeple explained that the design of HUMAN ONE allows the video in both the physical object and its NFT to be remotely and seamlessly modified from the blockchain, allowing the message and meaning of this piece to evolve over the course of the artist’s life.
HUMAN ONE is conceptually similar to the EVERYDAY project, in which artists post a new digital work of art every day. Although Beeple made it clear that the 3-D sculpture provides a different framework to express things that I am excited about.
According to the 255-year-old auction house, HUMAN ONE could fetch US$ 15 million. It will be auctioned off as part of Christie’s “21st Century Evening Sale” on November 9. Christie’s describes the 7-foot-tall piece depicting a helmeted astronaut as a “kinetic video sculpture” with four video screens and made in part of polished aluminium metal.
HUMAN ONE will be on display in Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries beginning tomorrow, October 30, 2021. According to Davis of Christie’s website, the exhibition will undoubtedly be a pilgrimage for believers in the bright future of NFTs.
